What conversations should I be having with my executor, family, or loved ones before I pass?

It's important that you communicate important wishes and details early on so that they can be taken care of as soon as possible after your passing.

Your executor is responsible for taking care of your affairs after your death. You should discuss with your executor how you want to handle your assets when you pass away. Let them know the names of your beneficiaries and provide them with the contact information so that they can begin taking care of everything immediately after your passing. It will also be important to tell them the location of key documents and information (such as the will), whether they’re in a filing cabinet, safety deposit box, or at your lawyer’s office. Finally, it will be helpful to your executor to know that you’re using Cadence, so that they can access information you’ve stored in your Legacy Planner account and take advantage of the Executor Assistant tool that we provide.

Your family is also responsible for taking care of things after you pass away. If there are any debts or property issues, they will need to take care of those. Make sure they know which debts and properties belong to whom and provide them with detailed information about how much each debt or property is worth so they can decide what needs to be done with those assets first. Your family may also want to communicate with each other about possessions that they particularly cherish and would like to receive.
