It is highly recommended that you name an executor so that you can ensure your estate is administered exactly as you wish. If you do not name an executor, you will essentially be leaving everything up to the courts to decide.

A few tips to keep in mind when designating an executor:

  • Create a shortlist of executors and determine pros and cons of each.

  • Contact the person who is your first choice and discuss the responsibilities with them.

  • Ask that person if they would be willing to handle these responsibilities, and if they decline, move on to your second choice.

  • Once you’ve found someone willing, update your will with your named executor and a second person as a back-up.
